ODKF AWARDS $191,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS TO HAWAII WATER SPORTS AND VOLLEYBALL ATHLETES

kelsey_naruse.jpgHONOLULU – The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF) announced the awarding of $191,000 in college scholarships and grants this year to 95 outstanding Hawaii athletes and nonprofit organizations participating in “Duke Sports” – water sports and volleyball.

“These are very deserving individuals and organizations who have earned our support with their commitment to furthering the greatness of Hawaii’s heritage in water sports and volleyball, and strengthening the foundation of our community,” said Dr. Malia Kamisugi, ODKF President.

In tribute to the memory of the legendary Duke Kahanamoku, ODKF awarded $99,500 in college scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year. A breakdown of the 60 recipients reflects the diversity of ODKF’s support for Hawaii’s scholar-athletes:

41 women, 19 men

29 public school graduates, 31 private school graduates

32 from Oahu, 28 from Neighbor Islands (Big Island-12, Maui-10, Kauai-6)

40 first-time awardees, 20 returning awardees

47 attending mainland colleges, 13 attending Hawaii colleges

Among the scholarship awardees is Nanea Fujiyama of Kamehameha Schools, this year’s winner of the $10,000 Duke Kahanamoku Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship. ODKF introduced this scholarship in 2008 to reward an exceptional college-bound Hawaii high school senior who embodies the spirit and character that made Duke Kahanamoku such a beloved figure.

The scholarship is renewable for up to five years, bringing its total value to $50,000. Last year’s winner, Jack Pope of Lahainaluna, also received a $10,000 scholarship for his second year of college studies.

In addition, ODKF awarded $91,500 to 35 grantees comprised of Hawaii athletes competing in water sports and volleyball events, and nonprofit organizations that provide water sports and character development programs for Hawaii’s youth. Organizations receiving ODKF’s support include AccesSurf Hawaii, Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii, and the Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy (see attached list).

ODKF is a public, nonprofit foundation whose mission is to financially support the development of individuals and organizations that perpetuate the spirit and legacy of Duke Kahanamoku. For more information, please visit www.dukefoundation.org.

Duke Kahanamoku is widely regarded as Hawaii’s greatest athlete, winning six Olympic medals, including three gold medals in swimming, from 1912-1932.  Revered worldwide for his exploits, Duke is recognized as the “Father of International Surfing” and later in life was honored with the distinction of being Hawaii’s official “Ambassador of Aloha.”
