2011 Ambassador awardees
FUJIYAMA, NANEA
anea is entering her third year at Occidental College where she studies Economics and Mathematics. Nanea is also an inspiring and dedicated member of the Occidental Women’s Water Polo team and is described by her coach as a “self-starter” who leads by example and who has gained the respect and admiration of her coaches and teammates alike. In her spare time, Nanea volunteers for the Asian American Tutorial Project where she collaborates with students from USC, UCLA and Occidental to tutor elementary school children in Los Angeles’ Chinatown in the areas of Mathematics and English.
KAHA’ULELIO, GABRIELLE “KEOLA”
Keola is a graduate of Kahuku High School who will be attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa this Fall. While at UH Manoa, Keola plans to study nursing and red- shirt for the women’s water polo team. Keola is an outstanding water-woman who thrives in leadership roles including serving as president of her surf club and as team captain for her paddling, swimming and water polo teams. She is active in her community, speaks fluent Hawaiian and dances hula with Hula Halau Na Lei Nani O Waialua. In her spare time, Keola works part-time at Aoki’s Shave Ice and participates in the junior lifeguard program.
POPE, JOHN “JACK”
Jack is entering his Senior year at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California where he majors in English. Jack is an integral member of the UOP Men’s Swimming team and finished this past season with lifetime best times in his 50, 100, and 200 freestyles. As described by his coach, Jack “is poised to be one of our most proud graduates. He meets each new challenge with a renewed spirit and can-do approach. Jack has persevered when others have not. Jack continues to realize success in all areas of his life through dedicating his energies to becoming a confident leader of those around him in the classroom, the swimming pool and beyond.”
