2011 Scholarship Awardees

Amina, Tyler: Tyler, currently a freshman attending Princeton University, is interested in pursuing a career in medicine. He is a member of Princeton's varsity water polo team which placed 3rd in the Collegiate Water Polo Association championships. While attending Kamehameha Schools, Tyler was co-captain of both the water polo and swimming teams and earned 1st Team ILH water polo honors during his senior season. Tyler will be performing clinical research with a neurosurgery team at Children's National Medical Center during the summer of 2011 and will be joining Princeton's First Aid and Rescue Squad as a volunteer EMT this fall. Tyler was awarded ODKF's 2010 Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship.

Chock, Mason: Mason attends Kamehameha Schools and will be heading to Santa Clara University in the fall. Mason competed in water polo, paddling, cross-country and track and field and was a member of Kamehameha School's state championship paddling team. He has also achieved success off the playing field as captain of the Kamehameha Speech and Debate team. Growing up on Kauai, Mason has developed a keen appreciation for his natural surroundings and plans to pursue a career in nature science with the hopes of returning to Hawai’i to help restore and preserve our natural resources. He has also been active in the community with projects such as the Kukui Malamalama Mentoriing Program, Keawewai Koa Reforestation Project, and with the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission.

Fu, Iiams Kaumaka: Kaumaka attends Kamehameha Schools and will be attending UH-Manoa in the fall. He is an accomplished paddler and kayaker, serving as captain and steersman of Kamehameha's 2010 and 2011 Boys Paddling state championship crews. He maintains a 3.6 GPA while also being involved in Kamehameha Schools Key Club, Hawaiian Ensemble, Student Dormitory Council and Community Clean-ups. As a neighbor island boarding student, his coach applauded his "team-first" attitude when Kaumaka stayed on Oahu during the holiday break to ensure he participated in all practices and races. He hopes to become a family physician and would like to serve the medical needs of the Native Hawaiian community.

Gill, Koral: Earned a 4.05 GPA at Lahainaluna High School and ranked 1st in her class while taking college prep courses. She has been accepted at Occidental College. Koral excelled in Water Polo, Swimming-100 meter breaststroke 1st place in 2010 State championships, surfing and cross-country. She is a member of the Student Council, president of the Environmental Club, and volunteered in several events on Maui.

Lee, Krista-Ann: Krista is a student at Roosevelt High School, accepted to four universities; Krista is still deciding which school to attend. Recognized as the most inspirational athlete in Volleyball, she also paddled and competed in Judo and track and field. Krista earned the Girl Scout Gold Award (equivalent to Eagle Scout for Boy Scouts) and is a section leader in Hawaii Youth Symphony. With an incredible schedule in community service and extra curricular activities Krista maintained a 4.0 GPA.

Li, Xinha (Cindy): A finalist for last year’s Ambassador of Aloha award, in 2010 Cindy received a $5,000 scholarship from ODKF to attend Yale University. Cindy continues to impress as a freshman at Yale. She played Water Polo for Yale’s club team. Her extracurricular involvement includes AIESEC (International Association of Students in Science and Commercial Economics), Yale’s Asian American Student Alliance, Hair and Makeup, Costume Design for several Yale plays and participation in student-run charity events. She maintains a 3.56 GPA and continues her Classical Piano practice.

Lockwood, Sarah: Sarah is a sophomore at Tufts University in Medford, MA. In high school she was an avid outrigger canoe paddler, upon moving to the East Coast for college she has continued her love of the water by joining the crew team. She has also found a new love, rock climbing; pursuing this both as a competitor and as a volunteer coach. She is a well- rounded individual, maintaining a 3.56 GPA while working three jobs to make ends meet after her father lost his job in the recession. She is a very committed young woman. She is also a past ODKF recipient.

Middendorf, Sara: Sara attends St. Andrew's PrioritySchool and will pursue her interests in sports and medicine by obtaining a degree in Physical therapy or Sports Medicine. She has been involved as a volleyball player since the 8th grade in school and Club teams. She keeps very busy with schoolwork, volleyball, extra curricular activities, family commitments, and commitments at church and manages a 3.92 GPA. |

Ng, Nicole: Nicole is an avid canoe paddler. She attends Sacred Hearts Academy and has been Student Ambassador all 4 high school years. Nicole also Volunteers at Makalapa Elementary by tutoring 6th graders for math and reading. She has received merit honor awards and has been inducted into the National Honor Society. All this and more and still keeps a 3.91 GPA. Nicole hopes to attend Purdue University and graduate with a Civil Engineering degree.

Rapozo, Morgan: Morgan Rapozo is currently a senior attending Waiakea High School and will be headed to Pacific University in the fall. Excelling on the volleyball court, she is caption of both her high school and club volleyball team. Since her sophomore year in high school, in addition to her full course load at Waiakea High, Morgan has been taking college courses and as of last year, she has earned 67 college credits! Morgan also values community service, participating in the National Honor Society and DECA Business Club.

Russo, Brigitte-Gregoria: Brigitte currently attends Punahou and plans to attend Lewis and Clark in the fall. Brigitte was recruited to play volleyball. At Punahou she excelled both in and out of the classroom. She currently holds a 3.67 cumulative GPA and received the President’s Award as a junior. This award is only given to three to four individuals out of a class of four hundred. The award recognizes leadership, citizenship and service. As a leader of the volleyball team she was a four-year letter winner, earning a place on the all-state team as a senior. She has shown a dedication to community service including work at the Hale Nui Nursing Center and the Hawaii Bone Marrow Registry.

Savath Saepoo: Savath is currently a senior attending Kalani High School and is undecided on his college of choice in the fall. Savath exemplifies persistence and determination. Being introduced to swimming as a freshman in high school, Savath has definitely accomplished a lot in his short swimming career. Hard work, dedication and commitment allowed Savath to be a part of a relay team that broke an OIA record set in 1987 in his senior year. He also was the 2nd fastest breaststroker for the OIA East Championships and the OIA Championship this past season. Savath aspires to be a doctor and has a bright future ahead of him.

Uekawa, Grant: Grant is the valedictorian at Waiakea High School in Hilo and is planning on attending UH Manoa in the fall. He is on the swim team, track team and cross country team at his school as well as a club swimmer. He has received numerous awards, such as the Scholastic Academic Award, Outstanding School Service, National Honor Society and is also the representative for the Hilo Aquatic Club, the Senior class treasurer, and the swim team captain at Waiakea. He would like to explore the avenues of renewable power when he graduates from college.

Williams, Ashley: Ashley is a new college applicant. She graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 2008 and now attends Syracuse University where she was a walk-on to the volleyball team in her freshman year and is now their leading libero. She maintains a 3.8 GPA and is in both the honors program and the Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Society, as well as being a teaching assistant and serving in various internships. She would like to become a COO for a company in Hawaii after graduation.

Fuller, Kristen: Kristen is currently a senior at Lahainaluna High School, where she maintains a 4.08 GPA. She is a three-year varsity swimmer and four-year varsity water polo player, earning honorable mention MIL honors for each. This fall, she will begin her studies at a four-year university on the mainland. When not in the pool, she is the President of Lahainaluna's National Honor Society, Vice President of its Aloha Club, and is a student representative for its parent teacher student association. She is actively involved in community service through her work at Habitat for Humanity and the Maui Humane Society. |

Garcia, Saryna-Brooke: Saryna-Brooke attends Kauai High School and will be attending UNLV in the fall. Serena has competed in volleyball, soccer, softball, and track, earning KIF Player of the Year and State All-star honors in soccer. She has been active in her community working with Relay for Life, Kauai Food Bank, Adopt-A-Highway, and Aloha Church youth ministry. She is excited to enroll at a 4-year university on the mainland to explore the opportunities beyond Kauai and hopes to return with a degree in Pscyhology or Criminal Justice.

Ho, Katelyn: Katelynn is graduating Cum Laude from Hawaii Preparatory Academy with a GPA of 4.517, and hopes to attend Cornell University. She is a BIIF all-American in basketball, and also plays volleyball, waterpolo and tennis. She has also logged more than 150 hours of community service. She hopes to study environmental science and sustainable farming.

Kawahara, Tori: Tori is graduating from King Kekaulike High School in Maui, and is in the running for valedictorian. She plays volleyball, basketball, tennis, judo and is also active in the Leo, Interact, Key, and Japanese Clubs and community service projects. She aspires to become a pediatrician and to practice in Maui.

Koethe, Anna: Anna is currently enrolled at University of Hawaii Manoa and is a past recipient of the ODKF Scholarship—2008-$2000, 2009-$1500, and 2010-$2500. Anna has been selected to Phi Beta Kappa, remains in upper division honors classes and is VP of Associated Students at UH. She maintains her volunteer commitment at March of Dimes. Anna paddles in the outrigger regatta season and plans to continue her Molokai Long Distance racing. She is an outstanding and motivated leader. |

Koethe, Francesca: Francesca is currently completing her first year at the University of Hawaii in Manoa. She has continued her active community involvement with the March of Dimes and has become involved with Student organizations at the University. She continues to be an active part of the paddling community. She has transitioned well to college academics maintaining a high GPA in her first year.

Langstaff, Taylor: Taylor excelled in Soccer and was captain Junior and Senior years, played on the varsity Volleyball Team, ran Cross Country and Swam for the Kapa'a High School team. Recognized as a leader Taylor represented Kapa'a in the Washington DC Youth Tour. Taylor has an impressive volunteer resume: Big Brothers Big Sisters, tutoring, United Way, assistant AYSO soccer coach, Angle Tree Project, Beach clean up and he is involved in his church's youth group volunteer projects. He earned a 3.8 GPA taking college prep and AP courses including Calculus and Physics as a senior |

Puhi, Kawena: Kawena lives in Molokai and hopes to one day be a nurse and a Pediatrician and come back home to help the people of Molokai. She is an avid sports person, involved in canoe paddling, swimming, and volleyball. Although school and athletics are her priorities, she finds time to volunteer in her community. Kawena will be attending Lewis and Clark State in Idaho.

Radtke, Ocean: Ocean attends Castle High School and will be going to Villanova University in the fall. She has been swimming since the age of 8 and has represented her high school swimming team as captain for the last two years. In her sophomore year, Ocean was introduced to water polo and she will continue to compete in water polo at Villanova. In addition to sports and academics, Ocean is heavily involved in community service. She is the current president of the Key Club, the secretary for the Interclub Council, a member of the National Honor Society, and has been a volunteer at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for the past 4 years. |

Ramones, Reyanne: Reyanne attends Maryknoll School and maintains a 3.74 GPA. She will attend UH-Manoa in the fall. She was voted to be the "Most Outstanding Paddler" in JV and is now the team captain of her crew. Her goal is to study Food Science and Human Nutrition. She plans to continue with her community service projects, and also wants to start coaching paddling. Her 1½ year-old daughter also keeps her busy. |

Ritte-Camara, Kailana: Kailana is currently a senior attending Molokai High and will be going to Linfield College in the fall, where she was recruited as an outside hitter. While a star on the volleyball court, Kailana also excels in paddling, leading her team to capture the MIL Division II Paddling Championships as well as placing third in the HHSAA State of Hawaii Canoe Paddling Championships. Kailana also participates in the Hawaiian Immersion program and has been bi-lingual since the age of three. As an immersion student and athlete, she has had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand, Tahiti, Oregon and California, where cultural exchanges were the focus of such trips. |

Shipman, Aubree: Aubree, a past recipient of ODKF funding, currently attends the University of San Francisco. Although her schooling has taken the bulk of her time, Aubree still participates in the University of SF volleyball intramural league. Aubree’s dream is to one day move back to the islands as a nurse. As a sophomore she had a 3.58 GPA. Along with her academics, Aubree finds time to help out in the community and participate in the University of SF work/study program.

Steele, Richmond: Richmond currently attends Moanalua High School and will most likely attend the University of Rochester in the fall. Richmond has a strong passion for athletics, academics and community service. He currently holds a 3.94 GPA, which puts him in the top 3% of his class. He was inducted into the National Honor Society in May of 2010. His athletic interests include both swimming and martial arts. As a swimmer he competed in both the Hawaii Junior age group championships and also the OIA championships. Richmond is also an eagle scout and uses his credentials to help mentor younger Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. |

Walker, Mark Jr.: Mark is a past ODKF recipient that graduated from Seabury Hall in 2010, and currently attends the University of Utah. He is part of the Utah State University Club volleyball team. Despite severe financial difficulties in his family, Mark makes the time to continue to work, train, and participate in his church while maintaining his 3.4 GPA in college.

Yamada, Kent: Kent is a 2-time past recipient who graduated from Mililani High School and now attends Columbia University, where he is majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He is on Columbia’s swim team, and turned in personal best times in 3 events this year. He also teaches swim lessons, volunteers at painting city playgrounds and with the Tug McGraw Foundation at the NYC marathon.

Borowski, Logan: Logan, a senior at Hawaii Preparatory Academy on the Big Island, looks forward to a bright collegiate swimming career at the California Polytechnical Institute in San Luis Obispo, California. While earning a 3.97 GPA, Logan has been a hard working and highly decorated member of his high school swim team, as evidenced by multiple Hawaii state swimming titles and All-American accolades. Outside of the pool, Logan stays busy participating in a variety of activities including Junior Lifeguards and HPA's Interact Community Service Club.

Chihara, Tyson: Tyson, currently a junior at Pomona College, has been awarded an ODKF scholarship for the past three years. While pursuing a B.A. degree in Sociology, he is a member of Pomona's Swim Team and will be the team captain for the 2011-2012 campaign. While at Kauai High School, Tyson was student body president and class valedictorian. Tyson is actively involved in the Pomona community, including his work at the Pomona College Museum and as an assistant at Pomona's Resource Center. Tyson interned at the prosecutor's office on Kauai during the summer of 2010 and is looking forward to a career in law after graduation from Pomona.

Harkness, Aaron: Aaron maintains a 4.0 GPA at the Hawaii Academy of Arts and Sciences in Pahoa. He plans on attending UH-Hilo in the fall. He is an avid surfer and is just breaking out in to the competitive realm. He is very active in his church and the Civil Air Patrol as well as helping to take care of his 6 siblings. He is described to be an "excellent student with solid fundamental skills, and an exemplary positive attitude."

Kamaka, Skylar: Skylar will be entering her senior year at Concordia College in Portland Oregon. After graduating from Kamehameha Schools in 2008, Skylar moved to the Pacific Northwest. She has been an Academic All conference volleyball player every year and has been recognized for her outstanding paly by earning all-conference awards. She continues her community involvement despite the demands of participating in an intercollegiate sport and maintaining a solid 3.5 GPA. Upon graduation she intends to return to Hawaii to work with youth in sports.

LeCoque, Olivia: Olivia attends Hualalai Academy in Kailua –Kona Hawaii where she was the one of the founding members of the school’s first varsity sport, paddling. She has earned numerous awards from her school for academic achievements, excellence in the arts, community awareness and good citizenship in caring for others and acts of kindness. She maintains a 4.0 GPA with a schedule involving mostly honors level courses. She plans to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa and hopes to go on to medical school.

Moore, Malia: Malia is currently a senior at Lahainaluna HS with a 3.85 GPA. She plans to pursue further education as pre-med at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. All this while maintaining swimming, waterpolo, extensive volunteerism, church activities, and a part-time job. She is goal oriented and self-motivated following her own creed for life, “100% of the shots you don’t take in life…don’t go in.”

Namahoe, Makamaekanani: Makamaekanani is currently a freshman at Long Island University on the C W Post campus. She is a student-athlete competing in Volleyball and multiple extracurricular activities with a 3.417 GPA. Her volleyball coach describes her as a great representation of her self, family, team, school and state. She is from Hilo, HI.

Pickering, Beau: Beau is an award winning sophomore swimmer at Princeton University while at the same time, pursuing a degree in pre-medicine. His extracurricular activities include Athletes in Action, Jock Docs, Hawaii Club and intramural volleyball and waterpolo. He graduated from Kamehameha Schools and was a past ODKF recipient in 2009 and 2010.

Rausch, Emma: Emma is a senior at Kapaa High School with plans to attend San Diego State in the fall. She is an avid swimmer and has been a part of the Kauai Interscholastic All Star swimming team for the past three years. She maintains a 3.63 GPA and ranks in the top 15% of her class. Along with athletics and school, Emma has dedicated a significant amount of time helping her community. She is a part of Big Brothers & Big Sisters and has assisted as a tutor at Kapaa elementary school.

Sutton, Kaopua Nani O Ke Kai: Kaopua Nani O Ke Kai is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools and is currently attending Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She is currently pursuing a major in either sociology, anthropology or biology and is planning to attend medical school upon graduation from Carleton. An avid paddler at Kamehameha, Kaopua continues to compete in long distance paddling in college.

Walters, Megan: Megan attends Kealakehe High School in Kona and is going to attend West Hawaii Community College then UH Manoa. She aspires to be a registered nurse...and inspired her mother to get her degree in nursing at the same time. She is the co-captain of the water polo team, and was part of Kealakehe's first state-champion swimming program this year. |
